Kids Backpack Sizes by Age: What Fits a 2, 3, 5 and 7 Year Old

Trixie Baby Mr Dino kids backpack, 31 x 23 x 10 cm, 7.5 litres, age 3 and up

A 2 to 3 year old needs about 5 litres and a bag around 25 cm tall. A 3 to 5 year old needs 7 to 10 litres, around 30 cm tall. From 6 or 7, when school starts, the right bag is 15 to 20 litres with a stiff back panel. Two rules matter more than the litre figure: the bag should be no wider than the child's shoulders and should sit above the waist, and the packed weight should stay around 10% of the child's body weight.

Kids backpack sizes by age

Age Average height Bag height Volume What it carries Example
2 to 3 85 to 100 cm 20 to 25 cm 4 to 6 L Snack, small bottle, one toy, spare clothes Trixie Small, 21 × 10 × 25 cm, 5.25 L
3 to 5 95 to 115 cm 28 to 32 cm 7 to 10 L Kindergarten: lunch box, bottle, change of clothes, A5 folder Trixie Backpack, 31 × 23 × 10 cm, 7.5 L
5 to 7 110 to 125 cm 30 to 35 cm 9 to 12 L Preschool, day trips, an A4 folder flat Trixie Backpack, 31 × 23 × 13 cm
7 and up 120 cm and up 35 to 40 cm 15 to 20 L School: A4 books, pencil case, sports kit An ergonomic school bag with a stiff back panel. We do not carry one.

Heights are population averages and vary a lot from child to child. Measure the child's back from the top of the shoulders to the waist and buy a bag shorter than that.

The two fit rules that matter more than litres

Width and height. The bag should be no wider than the child's shoulders, and the bottom of it should sit at the lower back, above the waist. A bag that hangs below the hips pulls the child backwards and swings when they run. A bag that is wider than the shoulders catches on doors and slides sideways.

Weight. Physiotherapists and paediatric bodies most often give 10% of body weight as the ceiling for a packed bag, with 15% as an absolute maximum. For a 15 kg three year old that is 1.5 kg, which is a lunch box, a bottle and a change of clothes. The empty bag counts too, so a light bag leaves more room for what goes in it.

What a toddler backpack needs at 2 to 3

At two, the bag is about independence, not capacity. The child carries their own snack and their own toy, and that is the whole job. Look for a bag around 25 cm tall and under 6 litres, a chest strap so it stays on narrow shoulders, and a zip pull big enough for small fingers. A name tag inside saves a lot of kindergarten confusion. The Trixie Small Backpack is 21 × 10 × 25 cm and 5.25 litres, with a chest strap, big zip pulls and a name tag, for age two and up.

What a kindergarten backpack needs at 3 to 5

Now the bag has a daily job: lunch box, water bottle, a full change of clothes, and whatever comes home from the day. That is 7 to 10 litres. The bag should have a main compartment and a front pocket, so the wet things and the dry things are apart, and a water repellent outer for the walk in the rain. The Trixie Backpack is 31 × 23 × 10 cm and 7.5 litres, cotton with a water repellent coating, padded adjustable straps, a chest strap and a name tag, for age three and up. Some versions are 13 cm deep, which is the difference between a lunch box that fits flat and one that fits on its side.

What a preschool backpack needs at 5 to 7

The same bag usually carries a child through to school. The test at this age is A4: if the child brings home drawings and folders, the bag needs to take an A4 sheet without folding, which means 31 cm or more inside. A side pocket for a bottle keeps it upright and away from the paper. The Trixie Proud Peacock has a side bottle pocket and the deeper 13 cm body.

When school starts

A school bag is a different object. It carries A4 textbooks every day, so it needs 15 to 20 litres, a stiff padded back panel, wide padded straps, and ideally a waist or chest strap that takes the load off the shoulders. Kids backpacks with a soft body, including the ones we carry, are not built for this. Buy a proper ergonomic school bag for that job, and keep the small bag for weekends and trips.

How to tell it is time to size up

  • The bottom of the bag sits on or below the hips.
  • The lunch box no longer fits flat.
  • The straps are at their longest setting.
  • The child asks for a bigger one. They usually know.

Care

The Trixie bags are cotton or recycled cotton with an acrylic coating. Wipe them clean with a damp cloth; check the label before any machine wash. Empty the bag on Friday. A forgotten banana is the most common reason a kids backpack gets replaced early.

The kids backpacks we carry

We carry Trixie Baby backpacks in two sizes: the Small at 5.25 litres for age two and up, and the standard at 7.5 litres for age three and up, in animal designs with a name tag, a chest strap and a water repellent coating. For what to look for in construction and materials, read the backpack durability checklist.

Common questions

What size backpack does a 3 year old need? About 7 to 10 litres and around 30 cm tall, with a chest strap. Enough for a lunch box, a bottle and a change of clothes.

What size backpack does a 2 year old need? About 5 litres and around 25 cm tall. It carries a snack and a toy; the point is the child carrying their own things.

How heavy can a child's backpack be? Around 10% of body weight packed, 15% at most. For a 15 kg child that is 1.5 kg, empty bag included.

Does a toddler backpack need a chest strap? Yes. Toddlers have narrow, sloping shoulders and the straps slip off without one.

Will a kids backpack fit an A4 folder? Only if it is 31 cm or taller inside. The Trixie standard size at 31 cm takes A4 flat; the Small does not.
