A linen towel absorbs water, dries in a fraction of the time of terry cotton, and softens with every wash. That makes linen the better fabric for a sauna bench and a strong choice for the bath — it never sits damp, and prewashed linen keeps its size for years.
Here is how to choose one, using the Estonian-made KOOS range as the example.
Linen versus cotton for towels
Terry cotton feels plush but holds water and dries slowly. Linen holds less water against the skin, wicks it away, and air-dries fast — which is why it suits a warm, humid sauna. Cotton stays fluffy; linen gets softer and more absorbent the more you wash it.
Weave and blend: which to pick
| Type | Feel | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 100% linen, fishbone | Flat, light, quick-drying | Sauna, travel, everyday bath |
| 100% linen, waffle weave | Textured, extra absorbent | A bath towel with more body |
| 78% linen / 22% cotton | Softest to the touch | If you prefer a little cotton softness |
All KOOS towels are prewashed, so none will shrink. The textured grey and textured white are the waffle weaves (80 × 148 cm). The brown pattern and blue fishbone are flat-woven 100% linen.
Pair it: robe and sauna seat
For the whole ritual, add the linen bathrobe and a linen sauna seat cover — a clean layer between you and a hot bench. All from the same KOOS workshop.
How to wash linen so it lasts
Wash separately at 40°C on a gentle cycle in plenty of water. Skip fabric softener and bleach. Do not tumble dry — reshape and dry flat. No ironing needed; linen only softens with washing.
Common questions
Do linen towels dry you properly? Yes. Linen is highly absorbent; it wicks water off the skin rather than holding it, so it dries you and then dries itself quickly.
Will a linen towel shrink? KOOS towels are prewashed, so they will not shrink or change shape with normal washing.
Why is my new linen towel not soft? Linen starts crisp and softens with each wash. A few cycles in it is noticeably softer, with no loss of absorbency.
What size are they? The waffle towels are 80 × 148 cm; the sauna seat cover is 38 × 38 cm.
