Editor's note

Snøluv's merino wool is mostly for children: tops, beanies, neck warmers and baby overalls from Lenne, a clothing brand founded in Tallinn in 1991; baby gift sets with a blanket, romper and bonnet from Wool In Love; and baby blankets from Woolish. Lenne also makes merino beanies and a neck warmer for adults.

Merino wool, explained

Why merino wool for children?

Merino fibres are finer than ordinary wool, so they feel soft rather than scratchy on the skin. The wool keeps warmth when a child sits still and lets moisture out when they move, which suits a layer under a rain suit or a softshell.

Is merino wool safe for babies?

Merino is widely used for baby clothing. Where a piece carries OEKO-TEX Standard 100, its fabric has been tested for harmful substances, and the certificate is named on the product page. Wool In Love uses mulesing free merino.

How do I wash merino wool?

Wash cool on a wool programme or by hand, with a wool detergent and no fabric softener, then dry flat. Merino needs washing less often than cotton; airing it between wears is often enough.

Merino or alpaca?

Merino is fine, elastic and easy to layer. Baby alpaca is warmer for its weight and contains no lanolin. Snøluv carries both: merino mainly for children, alpaca for scarves, socks and hats.
