Why Industrial Felt Is Becoming the Material of Choice for Modern Bags and Tech Accessories

Nordhale HOLM office bag in recycled industrial felt

Recycled PET felt is a dense textile pressed from fibres recovered from plastic bottles. It keeps its shape, sheds light rain and cleans with a damp cloth, which is why Nordhale uses it for laptop sleeves, bags and backpacks made by hand in Estonia.

This guide explains what the material is, how it behaves in daily use and what to expect from it.

What recycled felt is

Felt is a non-woven fabric. Instead of threads being woven or knitted, the fibres are compressed and bonded into a sheet.

In recycled PET felt, those fibres come from post-consumer PET, the plastic used for drinks bottles. The bottles are processed into fibre and pressed into felt.

The result has no warp or weft to unravel. A cut edge stays clean, so the material can be sewn into simple, straight shapes without heavy hemming.

How it behaves in daily use

It holds its shape

The pressed structure is dense. A felt sleeve stands upright in a bag and keeps its edges instead of folding in on itself.

That matters for a laptop sleeve. A sleeve that goes soft stops protecting the corners of the device.

It takes knocks and resists scratches

The thickness of the felt cushions small bumps. The surface does not scratch a laptop lid, and it grips rather than slides on a table.

It sheds light rain

Nordhale describes its felt as weatherproof against light rain. Water sits on the surface long enough to be wiped away. It is not designed to be submerged.

Caring for felt

Felt needs little maintenance. Spot-clean marks with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, then let the piece air-dry flat.

Do not machine wash, tumble dry or iron it. Heat and agitation can change the pressed structure.

Why it suits bags and sleeves

Everyday carry items take repeated handling: in and out of backpacks, on and off desks, through wet streets. A material that keeps its form and cleans easily lasts through that use.

Choosing a piece you will keep for years is the point. We would rather sell one sleeve that lasts than several that sag.

Recycled felt from Nordhale

Snøluv carries Nordhale, a small workshop in Estonia. Each sleeve, bag and backpack is cut, stitched and finished by hand from recycled PET felt, with leather details on some designs.

The range includes the slim Bodem sleeve, the Berg sleeve with a magnetic flap and wristband, and larger bags such as the Hjo briefcase.

Questions about recycled felt

Is recycled felt the same as wool felt?

No. Wool felt is made from animal fibre. Recycled PET felt is made from fibres recovered from plastic bottles, so it contains no wool.

Will a felt sleeve go floppy over time?

Dense pressed felt keeps its structure in normal use. Avoid machine washing and heat, which can soften it.

Can felt get wet?

It sheds light rain. Wipe water off and let it air-dry. Do not soak it.
