Details

The wider toe box is the reason to choose Trolla. It is cut for people who wear barefoot shoes and want the toes left alone, which no other pair in this collection does.

The elastic panel at the opening means the pair goes on over a high instep without a fastening. Note the sizing: single sizes 35 to 42, and the wool lining takes up room, so go up one for a looser fit.

Material

Light natural felt with floral embroidery, lined with 100% sheep's wool, on a soft latex insole that is itself covered in sheep's wool. The outsole is thin rubber. Three layers of wool between the foot and the floor, which is why the pair is warm without being bulky.

Maker

Omaking is a family shoe workshop in southern Estonia that has been making footwear since 1927. It works in natural wool felt and lambswool, cuts and sews by hand, and keeps the range small. TOKU is its design line, drawn by Piibe Tomp, named Estonian Young Designer of the Year in 2018.

Size & Fit

Single sizes, 35 to 42.

The wool lining takes up room inside, so go one size up if you want a looser fit.

The toe box is wider than usual, which suits anyone used to barefoot shoes.

Care

Take off pilling with a fabric shaver or a razor. Wool felt pills, and it is not a fault.
Hand wash, or machine wash at 30 °C on the wool programme with a gentle spin, inside a laundry bag.
Use a mild wool detergent. Do not bleach and do not tumble dry.
Air dry away from radiators, dryers and underfloor heating.
Washing can change the look of the leather labels.

Estonia

A workshop that has been making shoes in Estonia since 1927, still cutting felt by hand. Wool felt is warm without being airless, which is why a pair works on a heated floor as well as on a cold one. When they need it, they go in the machine at 30 °C and come back in shape.
