Linen is a flax fibre — stronger than cotton, highly absorbent, and quick to dry. Stonewashed (prewashed) linen is soft from the first wear and will not shrink, and it keeps getting softer with every wash rather than wearing out. That is why a linen dress or towel outlasts most of what is in a wardrobe.

What linen is, and what stonewashed means
Linen is spun from the flax plant. Raw linen starts crisp; stonewashing — washing the finished fabric with natural agents — breaks it in, so it arrives soft and pre-shrunk. Our dresses use 100% stonewashed European flax; see them in Linen Dresses.
Why linen gets better with age
Flax fibre is long and strong, so linen resists pilling and holds up to repeated washing. Each wash relaxes the fibres a little more, so the fabric softens and drapes better over months and years — the opposite of how synthetics fade. Prewashed linen also keeps its size, so a dress or towel stays true to fit.
Does linen wrinkle?
Yes, and that is part of the look — a soft, lived-in crease. If you prefer it smoother, hang it damp and the creases drop out, or press with a warm-to-hot iron while slightly damp. No need to chase a crisp finish.
How to wash and care for linen
Wash at 30–40 °C on a gentle cycle with plenty of room. Skip fabric softener and bleach; they coat and weaken the fibre. Dry flat or on a low line — avoid a hot tumble dryer. Linen only softens with washing, so no special treatment is needed.

Common questions
Does linen shrink? Prewashed (stonewashed) linen is already shrunk, so it holds its size with normal washing. Raw linen can shrink on the first hot wash.
Is linen good for summer? Yes — it is breathable and wicks moisture, so it stays cool, and it is light against the skin.
Why is my linen stiff at first? New linen softens over the first few washes. Stonewashed linen skips most of that and arrives soft.
Can you machine wash linen? Yes, at 30–40 °C on a gentle cycle, without softener or bleach. Dry flat or on a low line.
